BAPTISM
There are a number of baptisms for Christians. The first is a spiritual baptism which takes place when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:12. This is the baptism described in Romans 6:1-11 and through it, believers become:
- dead to sin, Romans 6:2,3,11
- freed from sin, Romans 6:7
- dead to the law, Romans 7:4,6 Galatians 2:19
- crucified with Christ. Galatians 2:20
All true believers have the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3,13. There is also a baptism with the Holy Spirit, which equips God's people for works of service. Matthew 3:11 Acts 1:8
Water baptism represents identification with Christ in His death burial and resurrection. It is God's appointed way of confessing Christ and should be one of the first actions of a true disciple of Jesus. Matthew 28:19 Romans 10:9,10.
