Gospel Words We Should Know
MERCY AND GRACE
LAW
The word has a number of different meanings.
The Moral Law
is the revealed will of God as to human conduct.
It is binding on all men until the end of time. Matthew 5:17, 18; it was given at Sinai, summarized in the Ten Commandments and explained in the teachings of Jesus.
It is perfect Psalm 19:7, holy just and good Romans 7:12, spiritual, Romans 7:14, exceedingly broad Psalm 119:96, and established through the gospel, Romans 3:31.
Love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:9,10. The purpose of the commandment is love. 1 Timothy 1:5
It never could give life since fallen man cannot obey it perfectly, and its purpose is to bring the knowledge of sin, leading to repentance, faith and love. Romans 3:19,20
The moral law is supremely important for the people of God throughout all generations. Deuteronomy 6:1-9 Revelation 14:12.
The Ceremonial Law
was given to regulate worship and religious practice under the Old Testament. Many aspects of it represented Christ and the redemption which He accomplished. He fulfilled all its requirements so that it is no longer in effect.
The Judicial Law,
the law which directed the civil policy of the ancient Hebrew nation.
While the Ceremonial and Judicial laws are no longer in effect, they have much to teach us by way of principle and example.
